Supplemental information

The Chief of Staff of UNTSO, Major-Generai Ensio Siilasvuo, has submitted the following report on incidents observed by United Nations military observers and complaints received from the parties on 24 October 1972:

Israel-Lebanon sector

1. OP 1/ reports on ground activity:

OP Ras: -Between 0425 2/ and 1522 Israel forces personnel, armoured personnel carrier and trailer reoccupied position at approximate MR 1907-2749 north of border pillar 19.

2. OP reports on air activity:

(a) OP Naq:  Between 0704 and 0706 two Israel forces jet aircraft flying south-south-west to north-north-east, were first observed over OP and last observed north-north-east of OP.  At 0731 three Israel forces Jet aircraft flying north-west to south-east crossed the ADL (armistice demarcation line) south-east of OP.

(b) OP Ras:    Between 1252 and 1253 one Israel forces jet aircraft flying north to south,  first observed north of OP, crossed the ADL south of OP.

3. Complaints by the parties:

A complaint has been received from Lebanon alleging that on 23 October between 0900 and 0925 two Israel forces jet aircraft twice overflew the Lebanese regions of Marjayoun (approximate MR 2056-3074, El Barouk (approximately 40 kilometres north-east of Marjayoun) and Bent Jbail (approximate MR 1908-2805).

The above complaint was not confirmed by United Nations observation. However, OP Ras reported jet sounds between 0908 and 0910 and between 0915 and 0916.

Israel-Syria sector OP reports:

(a) OP One: Between 0330 and 0412 sporadic machine-gun fire by Israel forces (confirmed by OP Zodiac).

(b) OP Yoke: Between O428 and 0452 sporadic machine-gun fire by Israel: forces.

(c) OP Six: Between 0430 and 0447 sporadic machine-gun fire by Israel forces.

(d) OP Romeo: Between 0522 and 0523 machine-gun fire by Israel forces.

(e) OP Five: Between 0747 and 0755 sporadic machine-gun fire by Israel forces.

(f) OP Two: At 1042 machine-gun fire, which ceased immediately, and between 1405 and 1407 machine-gun fire and small-arms fire by Israel forces.

(g) OP Three: Between 1400 and 1429 sporadic machine-gun fire by Israel forces.

(h) OP Four: Between 1415 and l442 sporadic machine-gun fire by Israel forces (confirmed by OPs November and Sierra).
