Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with H.E. Mr. Islam Karimov, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, on the margins of the 65th General Assembly

The Secretary-General met today, 20 September 2010, with H.E. Mr. Islam Karimov, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The Secretary-General expressed gratitude to the President for his country's contribution in resolving the humanitarian situation in Kyrgyzstan. The Secretary-General and the President discussed the importance of international partnership in ensuring stability and long-term development in Kyrgyzstan. They discussed issues affecting peace and security in Central Asia including the illegal drug trade and terrorism. The Secretary-General thanked the President for his participation in the Millennium Development Goals Summit and discussed with him efforts to address the Aral Sea crisis. The Secretary-General thanked the President for his country's contributions for improving conditions in Afghanistan
