Secretary-General's press encounter after opening of the 2007 Shanghai Olympics Exhibit (unofficial transcript)

Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General

Q: We know that China keeps working on the promotion of the special Olympic Games, and also to build a harmonious society. How do you evaluate their performance?

SG: I think it is very important that we all try to live in harmony, and respect the rights of everybody. And I am particularly pleased that this effort is being made for the intellectually disabled. Their rights are as important as anyone else's, and I am really happy to see the Games being organized in Shanghai. This will be the first time that the Games have been organized in the Third World, where the issues are equally pressing and important. So I congratulate Shanghai and the Government of China for organizing the Games.

Q: And do you have some advice for the Shanghai Government, as it's the first time the Games go to Asia and the developing world?

SG: I am sure that they will organize it very well, and they will have many athletes from other parts of the world participating in this, and I think it is an opportunity to demonstrate the diversity and the harmony of the world. We should understand that we may be different but there is also strength in diversity and we can all live and cooperate together and I am sure the organizers are very conscious of this.

Q: And we are looking forward to seeing you next year in Shanghai!

SG: As I said, I support the Games, and it would be a wonderful opportunity to be there cheering the winners!
