22 March 2011, Tunis

Remarks to Meeting of Civil Society Groups

Distinguished representatives of Tunisia civil society,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let me begin by saying what an honor it is to be here with you today.

Profound and dramatic changes are sweeping the Arab world.

And you, the brave people of Tunisia, have led the way.

You are the vanguard of the most epic events of the new century -- the revolutions of 2011.

The history of human progress is a history of struggle.

That struggle may be moral. It may be physical. It may be both, as it was here.

Mr. Vice-Chancellor, Excellencies and distinguished guests, Dear faculty members, dear students, Ladies and gentlemen,

Thank you, Mr. Vice-Chancellor, for your very kind introduction and for this invitation.

I am honored to have this opportunity after my distinguished predecessors, as fourth United Nations Secretary-General to speak before you in this very esteemed and one of the oldest universities. It is an honor to be part of the Oxford community, if only for a day.

28 January 2011, Davos

Remarks to the World Economic Forum Session on Redefining Sustainable Development

For most of the last century, economic growth was fuelled by what seemed to be a certain truth: the abundance of natural resources.

We mined our way to growth. We burned our way to prosperity. We believed in consumption without consequences.

Those days are gone.

In the 21st century, supplies are running short and the global thermostat is running high.

Climate change is also showing us that the old model is more than obsolete. It has rendered it extremely dangerous.

Over time, that model is a recipe for national disaster. It is a global suicide pact.

26 January 2011, Geneva

Remarks to the Conference on Disarmament

It is a great pleasure to address the Conference on Disarmament. Thank you for welcoming me for the third time since I took office.

I am here to express my confidence in the great potential of this body to play a catalytic role in advancing the disarmament agenda.

But I am also here to make a fresh appeal to you to live up to that potential – and to meet the expectations of the international community.

In the past several years, we have built important momentum -- hard-won momentum on which we can and must build.

21 December 2010, General Assembly

Remarks to the General Assembly on Côte d'Ivoire: "Standing for Democracy"

Mr. President, Excellencies,

The situation in Côte d'Ivoire has grown increasingly volatile.

There is a real risk of a return civil war.

The people of Côte D'Ivoire need our solidarity and our decisive action.

ECOWAS and the African Union have rejected the attempt by Laurent Gbagbo and his allies to illegally retain power.

The Security Council has affirmed its unequivocal support for the UN mission and its mandate.

I thank the member States for their strong and outspoken support. We will count on it even more in the days ahead.
