The Secretary-General welcomes the positive developments announced this weekend towards a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis in Bolivia. He welcomes the unanimous adoption of legislation to establish a new Supreme Electoral Tribunal that will call for the holding of general elections at the earliest possible opportunity. The United Nations will be ready to provide support as appropriate.

 

This latest development demonstrates the political will to end the crisis. To consolidate these gains and prevent further violence, more steps are, however, needed, such as curbing the rhetoric of intolerance, increasing cooperation among all political forces, and restoring trust and confidence amongst all those affected by the violent events of the past month.

 

The Secretary-General strongly urges the pursuit of peaceful and constructive dialogue. His Personal Envoy will continue to work with the facilitators to support efforts in this regard.

El Secretario General saluda los avances positivos anunciados este fin de semana hacia una solución pacífica y democrática de la crisis en Bolivia. Él acoge con beneplácito la aprobación unánime de la legislación para establecer un nuevo Tribunal Supremo Electoral que convocará elecciones generales lo antes posible. Las Naciones Unidas estarán listas para apoyar según corresponda.

 

Este último desarrollo demuestra la voluntad política para poner fin a la crisis. Sin embargo, para consolidar estos logros y evitar más violencia, se necesitan más pasos, como frenar la retórica de la intolerancia, aumentar la cooperación entre todas las fuerzas políticas y restaurar la confianza entre todos los afectados por los violentos eventos del mes pasado.

 

El Secretario General insta firmemente a los bolivianos a proseguir un diálogo pacífico y constructivo. Su Enviado Personal continuará obrando con los facilitadores para apoyar los esfuerzos en este sentido.
