Secretary-General's remarks at the Annual United Nations Correspondents Association Directory Book Reception [prepared for delivery]

Statements | Ban Ki-moon, Former Secretary-General

Thank you for inviting me to the launch of the United Nations Correspondents Association Directory.

I always look forward to this annual event. When I look through this Directory, I see more than simply names of journalists an media organisations.

I see the profound international reach and influence of UNCA. I thank you for all of the hard work that you do in reporting the United Nations to the viewers, listeners and readers of the world.

This past year has been a challenging and difficult one for many journalists.

Kidnappings and attacks are on the rise.  I have consistently spoken out on the need to protect journalists who are serving the public and doing their job.

I continue to raise the case of journalists still detained and urge all Member States to uphold the rights of journalists and to safeguard essential media freedoms.

We have a busy year ahead – on climate change, sustainable development and making the UN fit for purpose in this our 70th anniversary year.  And I expect you to be very busy covering all of those events!

In that spirit I would like to propose a toast; to a frank, free and fearless media -- and to wish all of you great success in the months ahead.

Thank you.
