Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on the death of Nestor Kirchner

The Secretary-General learned with great sadness of the untimely and sudden passing of Mr. Néstor Kirchner, Executive Secretary of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), former President of Argentina and current Deputy in the Argentinean Congress, and husband of President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

A friend of the United Nations, Mr. Kirchner was a national and international leader who believed in multilateralism. The Secretary-General wishes to extend his sincere condolences and respect to President Cristina Fernández, her family, and to the Government and people of Argentina.
