Secretary-General's message to the World Buddhist Forum

Statements | Ban Ki-moon, Former Secretary-General

The central Buddhist teachings of compassion, mutual respect and peace have great relevance in today's world. Challenges such as climate change, financial turmoil and the spread of infectious diseases demand a global and inclusive response based on tolerance and an awareness of our shared destiny.

By encouraging reverence for the wisdom of the Buddhist tradition in contemporary society, the World Buddhist Forum is contributing to the promotion of values that have much in common with the United Nations' own mission of peace, human rights and development.

The Forum's theme, “A harmonious world begins in the mind,” recalls the opening words of the Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO): “Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed.” Both emphasize the role of individuals in achieving our shared dream of a more peaceful, equitable and sustainable future.

It is my sincere hope that the Forum will succeed in its stated goal of creating conditions for a more peaceful world. I wish you all success in this noble endeavour.
