The Secretary-General met yesterday with H.E. Bob Carr, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Australia.
They discussed the issues of climate change, sustainable development, conflict prevention, the advancement of women and disaster risk reduction.
The Secretary-General commended Australia for its strong on-going commitment to these issues as well as for its generous financial support in the areas of humanitarian affairs and disaster preparedness and gender violence.
The Secretary-General expressed serious concern about the situation in Syria and welcomed Australia’s financial commitment to support humanitarian efforts in the region.
They further discussed the forthcoming Rio+20 Conference, as well as the situation in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the Middle East, Myanmar, Timor-Leste, and Pacific Islands, including Fiji.
