Remarks made by the Secretary-General upon entering UN Headquarters
Press events | Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General
SG: Well, the understanding he's reached with West African leaders is that he will hand over in the course of this week, and the expectations are that he will leave on the 11th of August.
Q: And what if he insists on the war crimes being taken away before he does that?
SG: The law has to take its course –I do not see that being done. I've also noticed that he's challenging the indictment in court, and I think the law will take its course.
Q: Can you comment on [Carla] Del Ponte coming here on Friday?
SG: Well, I understand she's coming to meet some of the members of the [Security] Council. As you know, I have a recommendation before the Council regarding an extension for one term and a designation of a separate Prosecutor eventually for the Rwanda Tribunal. I hope she will have good discussions with the Council but I stand by the proposal I have made to the Council.
Q: My last question on Libya and the document, the resolution that might be put forward next week. Is Libya cleared if they come up with a document and take responsibility?
SG: I've not been too intimately involved in the discussions or negotiations between the US Government and the Libyan Government, so I can't comment on the status of their discussions and as to what action the [Security] Council will take, I think it's a bit early. I haven't seen any draft resolution on that yet.
