Secretary-General's press encounter prior to the Meeting of the Commission on Sustainable Development (unofficial transcript)
Press events | Ban Ki-moon, Former Secretary-General
SG: I had a talk with Prime Minister Gordon Brown. I have been talking with many leaders on various ideas, except with [Senior] General Than Shwe. Now this afternoon, I have invited some ambassadors, representatives of the Member States, to discuss all the options, how we can go ahead. Until now, regrettably, I think we have spent much of our time and energy in facilitating aid, getting food in, and visas being issued. Even though the Myanmar Government has shown some sense of flexibility, at this time, it's far, far too short. The magnitude of this situation requires much more mobilization of resources and aid workers. Now I'm going to really discuss this matter with some members of the key donors, as well as ASEAN [Association of South-east Asian Nations] countries, this afternoon and discuss what kind of concrete measures we can do from now on. Now I think we are entering to almost a second stage of our operation to help the Myanmar people.
Q: .Including a summit? Is that part of the consideration?
SG: Everything may be discussed.
Q: How about you going to Myanmar? I guess I also heard that proposal.
SG: I'm not able to make any comment at this time. But we will try to make a small, a brief, statement, after this meeting.
