Today International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories starts.

Today is also World Football Day.

Sunday,  26 May

Today, the Secretary-General will travel to Antigua and Barbuda to take part in the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States. He will first attend the High-Level Closing Session of the Small Island Developing State Business Network on Sunday afternoon. On Monday, he will address the opening ceremony of the Conference where he will reiterate the UN’s support for the aspirations of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) – from halting and mitigating the impacts of the climate crisis, to building resilient economies and fostering safe, healthy and prosperous societies. He will also call on the international community to support SIDS in the challenges they face and will underscore that SIDS are a test case for climate justice and financial justice. The Secretary-General will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with leaders, including Gaston Alphonso Browne, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.
And on Tuesday, the Secretary-General will take part in the High-Level Meeting on Resource Mobilization for Small Island Developing States.

From 27-30 May, the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States is taking place in Antigua and Barbuda, organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS).

Monday, 27 May

Today is a UN Official holiday and the UN Headquarters in New York will be closed.

Tuesday, 28 May

This morning, the Security Council is scheduled to hold a debate on maintenance of international peace and security: The role of women and young people.

At noon, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General will hold a press briefing, broadcast live on UN Web TV. This will be followed by a briefing by the Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly.     

In Geneva, the UN Information Service will hold its bi-weekly briefing for journalists.

Wednesday, 29 May

Today is the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

This morning, the Security Council is scheduled to hold a briefing on the Middle East followed by consultations.

At 9:00 a.m., a webinar on “Innovation and Digital Government” will be organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

At noon, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General will hold a press briefing, broadcast live on UN Web TV. This will be followed by a briefing by the Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly.     

An expert group meeting on “Harnessing the potential of critical minerals for sustainable development” will take place at UNHQ and online on 29 and 30 May. The meeting is organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

AI Governance Day: From the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) AI for Good's first dedicated​ AI Governance Day brings government officials and the global AI community together to discuss how best to implement principled AI frameworks while ensuring that no country is left behind.​ Location: International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG) plus remote.

Thursday, 30 May

Today is the International Day of Potato.

This morning, the Security Council is expected to vote on a draft resolution renewing the mandate of the UN Assistant Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), and on South Sudan sanctions and on Libya [SCR 2292]. This will be followed with a briefing on the Middle East, followed by consultations (Syria). In the afternoon, a briefing at the Council is expected by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi.

At 10:00 a.m., there will be a Global Policy Dialogue from the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States on “The Demographic Prospects of Small Island Developing States”. The dialogue is organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

At noon, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General will hold a press briefing, broadcast live on UN Web TV. This will be followed by a briefing by the Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly. 

The guest at the Noon Briefing will be Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, on the occasion of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

Every year on 29 May, the UN and broader global community commemorates the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, honoring the remarkable women and men who have served in UN peacekeeping missions over the past 75+ years. The day pays tribute to their dedication, their professionalism and their brave while remembering those who have given their lives in the pursuit of peace. This year’s theme is "Fit for the Future, Building Better Together” and is designed to acknowledge UN Peacekeeping's evolving role in helping host countries and communities and building on the Secretary-General's New Agenda for Peace policy brief to address future crises and conflicts effectively. The Day will be marked on Thursday, 30 May at UNHQ.

Today, in Geneva in Switzerland, the AI for Good Global Summit will start. The Secretary-General will have a video message. The ITU summit will continue from 30 to 31 May, 2024. More information here. AI leaders and experts consider how artificial intelligence can support the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This event will feature innovations in generative AI, robotics, and brain-machine interfaces. Location: International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG) plus remote.

Friday, 31 May     

Today is World No Tobacco Day.

At noon, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General will hold a press briefing, broadcast live on UN Web TV. This will be followed by a briefing by the Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly.

AI for Good Global Summit 2024 press conference: Brain-machine interfaces (13:00-14:00 CEST / 07:00 – 08:00 EDT): ITU's AI for Good Global Summit will include a press conference to showcase mind-controlled exoskeletons and other brain-machine interface technology. Registration for physical or remote participation with the press conference is open. ​ Location: International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG) plus remote.
