On the margins of the United Nations High-Level Counter-Terrorism Week, a dedicated side event titled “Addressing the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean as a key component of counter-terrorism” will be held on Thursday, 2 July 2026 from 08:00 – 09:30am EDT. The side event will take place at the Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the United Nations and will also be accessible via Microsoft Teams.

On Friday, 26 June 2026, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), are co-organizing a side event on “Beyond Tokenism:  Women Leading Prevention, Justice and Policy in Counter-Terrorism from 10:00 – 11:15 EDT at United Nations Headquarters in New York in Conference Room 11.

On Monday, October 27, 2025, the Counter-Terrorism Committee will host an open briefing, which will convene a wide range of representatives from Member States and international and regional organizations, as well as civil society and members of the Global Research Network, to reflect on two decades of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED). The forward-looking discussion will focus on the impact of CTED’s work and lessons learned; trends and developments in terrorism and counter-terrorism; and CTED’s unique ability to support Member States in their counter terrorism efforts.

In September 2014, the Security Council adopted resolution 2178 (2014) on preventing and suppressing the recruiting, organizing, transporting or equipping of foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs). This followed the announcement by ISIL (Da’esh) of a self-declared “caliphate” in its captured territories in the Syrian Arabic Republic and Iraq, which had already attracted more than 15,000 FTFs to join the group.
