Recalling recent terrorist attacks carried out in Kenya, including the September 2013 attack against Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall, Major-General Nkaissery reaffirmed his Government’s determination to combat terrorism through a wide range of measures, including in the areas of information-sharing, rehabilitating returnees, and countering violent extremism.

He expressed his appreciation for the recent assessment mission conducted to Kenya by CTED on behalf of the Counter-Terrorism Committee. The visit had resulted in the identification of a number of key areas in which Kenya would benefit from technical assistance aimed at enhancing its counter-terrorism machinery and operational capacities.

Mr. Laborde reaffirmed the readiness of CTED to be an active facilitator of technical assistance and stressed that Kenya was a close partner of the UN in fighting terrorism and countering violent extremism. He also emphasised the need for Member States to enhance their counter-terrorism capacities with the support of the international community, and welcomed Kenya’s efforts to strengthen its response to terrorism through the introduction of a series of laws and through engagement with civil society.
