HIGHLIGHTS OF PRESS BRIEFING BY BRENDEN VARMA, SPOKESPERSON FOR GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT MIROSLAV LAJČÁK
HIGH-LEVEL FORUM ON CULTURE OF PEACE TO BE HELD TOMORROW
- Tomorrow morning, the President will convene this year’s High-level Forum on the Culture of Peace.
- The theme will be: “The Culture of Peace: A Credible Pathway to Sustaining Peace”.
- The one-day forum will highlight emerging trends that have an impact on this topic.
- It will allow Member States and other actors to exchange views on how to further promote a culture of peace.
- The opening session will be held in the General Assembly Hall and feature remarks by the President and the Secretary-General’s Chef de Cabinet. The keynote address will be delivered by Rigoberta Menchú, the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
- There will then be a panel discussion in the afternoon in the Trusteeship Council Chamber. The panellists will include the UN’s Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, the Permanent Representatives of Kenya and Mexico, the Director of UNESCO’s Office in New York, and the Director of the Peace and Justice Institute in Orlando, Florida.
GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO PAY TRIBUTE TO KOFI ANNAN ON 21 SEPTEMBER
- The General Assembly expects to hold a commemorative meeting to pay tribute to former Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Friday, 21 September at 10:00 a.m.
- According to the standard format, the meeting would start with remarks by the President of the General Assembly, which would then be followed by statements by the Secretary-General, the Chairs of the regional groups, the host country and Observers.
- A minute of silence, as well as a traditional African cultural performance, are also expected.
ASSEMBLY TO CONSIDER PATH TOWARDS POSSIBLE GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL PACT
- The General Assembly’s process to address possible gaps in international environmental law and environmental related instruments will start tomorrow.
- This is in accordance with the General Assembly’s resolution from last May, entitled “Towards a Global Pact for the Environment”.
- The President will address that meeting tomorrow in Conference Room 4.
PRESIDENT TO HOLD END-OF-SESSION PRESS CONFERENCE NEXT WEEK
- The President will hold his end-of-session press conference on Thursday 13 September at 11:00 a.m. at United Nations Headquarters.
