Reception to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic

– As delivered –

Statement by H.E. Mr. Miroslav Lajčák, President of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly, at reception of Azerbaijan to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic

Excellencies,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am honored to be with you tonight to celebrate the anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. 100 years and 1 day ago, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was established. We celebrate the centennial of the country, which was already in 1918 the republic we would call modern. Azerbaijan in 1918 decided through the National Charter to grant all its citizens within its borders full civil and political rights, regardless of ethnic origin, religion, class, profession, or gender. These historic achievements laid the solid foundation for contemporary Azerbaijan.

I would like to thank Azerbaijan for being a constructive and active United Nations’ member. I would also like to acknowledge commitment of Azerbaijan to multilateralism, its investments in dialogue, partnerships and meaningful initiatives, such as the „Baku Process.“ Multiculturalism is another remarkable achievement, which is present not only in the country itself, Azerbaijan promotes tolerance also abroad.

I was honored to address NAM conference in Baku in April what I have learned is that the NAM will be in good hands during the chairmanship of Azerbaijan in 2019

Let me wish the citizens of Azerbaijan all the best on the occasion of their national day – the day when the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was established.
