President of the UN General Assembly supports Poster for Peace Contest

United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs Announces ‘Poster for Peace’ Contest

In support of nuclear disarmament, the President of the United Nations General Assembly Mr. Mogens Lykketoft is encouraging creative citizens everywhere to enter the global United Nations “Poster for Peace” contest.

The initiative sponsored by the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs  invites citizens from all over the world to join in and use their artistic talents to help promote a world free of nuclear weapons. Entries to the contest can be submitted until 24 January 2016. The top three entries will be announced on 5 March 2016 and awarded monetary prizes.

It is not a coincidence that the date of the contest deadline is also the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the first United Nations General Assembly resolution, adopted on 24 January 1946. That resolution established a commission to formulate proposals for the elimination of nuclear weapons and of all other major weapons of mass destruction. Since its adoption, every United Nations Secretary-General has supported this goal, and while there have been significant reductions in nuclear arsenals, many thousands of nuclear weapons remain.

But supporting global disarmament does not end at the highest political level. All citizens from around the world can use their artistic talent and make their voices heard by submitting their poster idea to the contest. This is a unique opportunity to be counted as a member of the global community supporting disarmament and the United Nations in its work to eliminate nuclear weapons and all weapons of mass destruction.
