Peacebuilding Partners - Denmark

Denmark

Conflict prevention and peacebuilding are key priorities for Denmark. Denmark has been a strong supporter of the Peacebuilding Architecture since the beginning, having held the presidency of the Security Council when the UN Peacebuilding Architecture was created in 2005, serving on the Peacebuilding Commission in 2023-2024, and currently serving as a member of the Security Council for 2025-2026.

DPPA’s Peacebuilding Support Office is grateful to Denmark for being a leading multi-year donor to the Secretary-General's Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), including through the current contribution for the period 2024-2026, in line with the Secretary-General’s call for adequate, predictable and sustained financing for peacebuilding. Over the current PBF Strategy 2020-2026, Denmark has provided more than $61 million, enabling the UN system and partners to prioritize prevention, foster inclusive and locally driven approaches, and advance the full, equal and meaningful participation of women in peace and security. Denmark’s support has also helped the PBF address the interlinkages between climate, peace and security.

Through the decentralized Gender Promotion Initiative 2.0, extended to seven countries in 2024, Denmark’s contributions supported the integration of Women, Peace and Security programmes into national prevention and peacebuilding strategies. In Niger, for example, two women’s organizations implemented the National Action Plan on women, peace, and security by leading grassroots initiatives and engaging traditional leaders as champions for women’s rights.

In Kasai, Democratic Republic of the Congo, over 200 women have been trained as community mediators, helping to reduce violence and strengthen social cohesion. Their efforts are resolving disputes that once escalated into conflict—including land disputes, family feuds, and inter-community tensions—while also fostering trust and advancing women’s leadership at the community level.

Ambassador Christina Markus Lassen, Permanent Representative of Denmark emphasized: “At a time of rising violent conflicts and growing demand for UN peacebuilding support, we must strengthen our collective investment in peace. The Peacebuilding Fund is a vital, agile, and risk-tolerant instrument of the Secretary-General, with national ownership at its core. As one of the Fund’s major donor partners, Denmark commends the tangible results achieved through PBF investments.”
