World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

The WMO has a dedicated programme to address the special problems and needs of the LDCs, and to enhance the capacity of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in order to contribute to the socio-economic development of these countries. The Programme assists all countries in the preparation and implementation of strategic plans for their National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) based on the priority needs of countries and in alignment with the National Development Plans and Programmes. This enabling environment ensures sustainable development of NMHSs and fosters closer cooperation between government ministries and departments in charge of NMHSs. These sections of government are responsible for setting national priorities in order to secure political buy-in and goodwill towards NMHSs. Through these efforts, Members will recognize the national and international significance of investing in NMHSs, as part of the development priorities reflected in their National Development Plans (NDPs) and Poverty Reduction Strategy Plans, while bringing visibility, ownership and the commitment needed to demonstrate the contribution of NMHSs in the sustainable development of their countries.
