Multilateral Environmental Agreements

Certain multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) take into account the special needs of LDCs or give them priority in the allocation of resources.  In most cases LDCs are considered along with other categories of countries, in particular SIDS:

 The 2022 application period to the International Design Education (IDE) Program is open from January 26 to February 28, 2022. Aiming to provide educational support to the world’s 46 least developed countries (LDCs), scholarship opportunities are provided to students of the LDCs.

Several multilateral and regional development organizations dedicate a significant share of their resources to LDCs, even though many do not use the LDC list as such to allocate assistance, and rather apply criteria that are closely correlated to the criteria that define LDCs

Official development assistance (ODA) represents an important—in some cases critical—component of external financing in LDCs.*  Bilateral development assistance programs are determined by a number of factors, including the recipient country’s needs, donor policies and priorities, availability of funds, and regional and historical ties.
