The UN Charter identifies the rights and obligations of Member States. It also establishes the UN principal organs and procedures.

The UN officially came into existence on 24 October 1945, after World War II, when nations across the world ratified the UN Charter. In commemoration of this historic pledge for world peace, United Nations Day is celebrated annually on October 24.
