Before the Flood and CCOI:

In the documentary film “Before the Flood”, UN Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio travels to five continents and the Arctic to uncover the reality of climate change. Following scientists on their expeditions, Mr. DiCaprio gains first-hand insight into the devastating effects of climate change. He further meets with world leaders who fight against political inaction, such as former US president Barack Obama and Pope Francis. Additionally, the film chronicles intergovernmental processes, which culminated in the signing of the Paris Climate Agreement in April 2016, a historic event in which Mr. DiCaprio participated as a keynote speaker.

CCOI coordinated interviews with senior UN officials and facilitated the on-location filming at UN headquarters. UN locations featured in “Before the Flood” include the exterior of the UN Secretariat as well as the iconic General Assembly Hall.

“Before the Flood” was screened at the Economic and Social Council Chamber of UN headquarters in October 2016. Amongst others, the special event was attended by former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, former US Secretary of State John Kerry, and actress Shailene Woodley. The screening was followed by a panel discussion with Mr. DiCaprio, Mr. Kerry, Academy Award-winning director Fisher Stevens and Piers John Sellers, Deputy Director of Sciences and Exploration at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
