The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations leading international efforts to defeat hunger. FAO’s goal is to achieve food and security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food and lead active, healthy lives.

OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort.

UNRWA

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions from UN Member States. UNRWA also receives some funding from the Regular Budget of the United Nations, which is used mostly for international staffing costs.

The Library

Symmetrically balancing the Council Building across the Cour d’Honneur is the six-storey Library Building.

The Library was created for the League of Nations in 1919 and has been open ever since. (Its doors remained open during World War II.)

Operating from this building since 1937, the UN Library at Geneva is one of the richest bibliographical collections in Europe.

It has more than one million volumes in specialized areas of international law, international relations, economic and social development, energy and environmental policy.

Swiss Lounge

Above the usually busy buzz of conversation, three large frescoes peer down from the three un-windowed walls.

Created by the Swiss artist Karl Otto Hügin, they depict scenes from Swiss history combined with moral and religious themes. The biblical figures of the Good Samaritan, the Good Shepherd, St. George and St. Martin are particularly striking.

The room’s interior was given to the League of Nations by Switzerland in 1937, since when it has continued to be one of the most popular and well-used rooms in the Palais.
