Small Islands, Big Solutions: Accelerating Sustainable Energy Transitions for Climate Action towards Future Prosperity

Overview
At the SEforALL Forum in Barbados in March 2025, representatives from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) convened to address the pressing challenges posed by climate change and energy insecurity and issued a Call to Action underscoring the urgent need for collaborative efforts to accelerate sustainable energy transitions in SIDS. This aims to build climate-resilient economies and achieve sustainable development goals. The key principles of this Call to Action are enshrined in an Energy Compact, with signatories including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Fiji, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Tonga.
Commitments and Recognitions
- Acknowledgment of the establishment and operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund at COP27 and COP29, respectively.
- Recognition of COP28 agreements to triple renewable energy capacity and double global energy efficiency improvements by 2030.
- Emphasis on the need for increased, accessible, and tailored funding mechanisms to support SIDS in their sustainable energy transitions.
- Reaffirmation of commitments made in the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS), the Samoa Communiqué (2024), and the G20 Principles for Just and Inclusive Energy Transitions (2024).
Call to Action
SIDS urge development partners and the international community to:
- Provide immediate and decisive support for just and equitable energy transitions in SIDS.
- Enhance access to public and grant-based resources, as well as highly concessional finance, for adaptation and addressing loss and damage.
- Support the scaling up of climate-resilient renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies and infrastructure.
- Facilitate international cooperation, technical assistance, and financial support to overcome barriers in deploying sustainable energy solutions.
