The Department of Peace Operations has launched its fourth Annual Report on Women, Peace and Security, “Peace is never a political treaty that is signed between a couple of men”.

The report showcases progress made on the women, peace and security agenda in 2022.

Advancing women’s participation and integrating gender in peacekeeping is a priority for UN peacekeeping. Some highlights include:

  • In Kosovo, the Global Open Day was celebrated with high-level participants, including Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu and Caroline Ziadeh, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK).

  • In Mali and South Sudan, quarterly meetings were held between the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and civil society, including women’s organizations.

Peacekeeping missions supported women in negotiating peace and monitoring peace agreements. For example:

  • The UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) facilitated the participation of women representatives in the third round of the Nairobi Process. Out of 110 representatives of the civil society, 40 per cent were women, some of whom were survivors of conflict-related sexual violence.

  • In Lebanon, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) helped to establish a local women’s mediation network to prevent and manage local conflicts.

  • In Cyprus, the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) facilitated over a hundred intercommunal initiatives with women, youth, and the diplomatic community to strengthen women’s participation at all stages of the peace process.

  • In Abyei, the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) commenced monthly meetings on women, peace and security. These consultative meetings engage local women’s organizations, including about 100 Ngok Dinka members of the Abyei Women Association.

Creative communications initiatives continued to elevate the voices of women leaders. The third season of the Seeking Peace podcast highlighted the diverse voices of women building, making, and keeping peace.
