This course has been specifically designed for experts from the Member State missions to the United Nations in New York. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of AI technology trends, AI opportunities and risks, and what is happening in AI governance, around the world and at the UN. This knowledge will be integral to several ongoing UN initiatives, in particular, the intergovernmental negotiations on the Global Digital Compact, taking place during the first and second quarters of 2024.

The course will provide participants with the opportunity to interact with and learn from experts on AI development and AI governance, whilst exploring the following questions:

  • How does AI work and what is the state of AI research and development?
  • What are/will be the implications of AI on our economies, societies and governments?
  • What makes AI governance particularly challenging?
  • What are some possible approaches to AI governance?
  • Which role could the UN play in governing AI?
  • How does AI fit within the Global Digital Compact?
