This week, the United Nations system took a significant step forward in enhancing its operational capabilities by endorsing the declaration on the development of unmanned aviation frameworks.
This system-wide collaboration, led by the Department of Operational Support (on behalf of the UN Secretariat), the World Food Programme, and the International Civil Aviation Organization, presents a unique opportunity for the United Nations entities to improve their efficiency and effectiveness of unmanned aircraft systems activities in support of their respective mandates, missions and objectives, particularly in the areas of humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and the rule of law.
Twelve UN entities, so far, have committed to the increased coordination, development, harmonization, and implementation of these frameworks to address the challenges and risks associated with unmanned aircraft systems operations. They plan to work together to ensure the safe and effective use of unmanned aircraft systems in support of their critical missions.
This initiative underscores the dedication of the UN to using advanced technologies to enhance operational capabilities and fulfil global mandates.
