In support of the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy and SDG 11, which includes a target to achieve safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, the Department of Operational Support is continuously evaluating and adapting its internal operations to be more inclusive and ensure its services can provide operational support to all of its clients without limitation.
The Travel and Transportation Section (TTS) manages a diverse fleet of approximately 45 vehicles supporting various operational clients at Headquarters (e.g., Department of Safety and Security, VIP transport, facilities management, materials management and other campus operations).
The Travel and Transportation Section is proud to introduce its newest addition to the fleet – a Ford Transit Connect Passenger Van that has been upgraded to support the transport of passengers who use wheelchairs. The van has a wheelchair-accessible ramp in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
It can easily accommodate a single wheelchair user along with up to four additional passengers.
The retrofitted design also includes an auto-retracting wheelchair anchoring system which makes the van a multi-functional support vehicle, as the wheelchair ramp folds down flat when it is not in use.
This vehicle will enhance the Section’s ability to provide more inclusive support for ad hoc operational tasks, including meeting participant transport and VIP client transport.
This new vehicle complements the fleet’s existing accessible vehicle (a multi-passenger van) but provides a more agile option for smaller, individual transportation needs. All TTS drivers have been trained to use this vehicle to support our clients.
With this vehicle modification, TTS is now able to quickly and efficiently transport passengers who use wheelchairs within the tri-state area.
The Travel and Transportation Section is in the Division of Administration of the Department of Operational Support (DOS). Read about DOS on iSeek or our website and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
