Rodrigo Rosenberg's murder was shocking. He was a lawyer in Guatemala, one of the most dangerous countries outside of warzones in the entire world, with a political system rife with corruption and links to organized crime.
After his murder in May 2009, a video surfaced in which he stated that if he were found murdered, the President of Guatemala would have been behind the assassination and should be held accountable. However, as part of their intensive efforts to stamp out corruption, organised crime and impunity in the country, a UN-led Commission found that Mr. Rosenberg had organised his own assassination (Wikipedia), hiring cousins of his wife to carry out the killing (Time).
He had been in a relationship with a woman called Marjorie Musa, who had been assassinated in February of 2009, and was depressed. He suspected the government's involvement in her death, so committed suicide (by hit-man) and tried to implicate the government in his death.
This New Yorker piece on the death gives an in-depth account of the affair.
