UN Emblem and Flag

UN Emblem and Flag

The UN emblem’s design was approved by the GA on 7 December 1946. It consists of a map of the world surrounded by two olive branches. Olive branches are ancient Greek symbols for peace. The map of the world illustrates the UN’s work toward world peace. To prevent the misuse of the UN emblem, it cannot be used without the authorization of the Secretary-General.

On 20 October 1947, the GA adopted a resolution about the UN flag. The resolution stated that the UN flag would bear the UN emblem on a light blue background (refer to page 63).
