Koya University, a United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) member institution in Iraq, has achieved a significant milestone in environmental sustainability by winning the Athar Award for its outstanding initiatives in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices.

The award ceremony was held on 27 October 2025 in Baghdad, where the University was honoured for its contributions. Koya University secured first place in the Kurdistan Region, second place among Iraqi public universities, and fourth place overall among all public and private universities in Iraq, underscoring its leadership in environmental awareness and sustainability initiatives.

The Athar Award recognizes institutions that implement impactful projects to reduce environmental impact, promote sustainability, and educate communities about ecological responsibility. Koya University has been actively advancing campus sustainability through programmes focused on waste reduction, recycling, energy efficiency, and the integration of environmental education across its faculties.

The University’s leadership continues to emphasize environmental stewardship as a strategic priority, aligning with its vision to cultivate a “Green University” that serves as a model for others in the region.

Prof. Dr. Mohammed H. S. Zangana, President of Koya University, expressed pride in the achievement, stating: “This award reflects our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.
