Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on the death of an UNMIS Indian peacekeeper

The Secretary-General condemns the killing earlier today of an UNMIS Indian peacekeeper, who was shot dead by unidentified attackers when the de-mining team he was escorting came under fire near Magwe in Southern Sudan. Two other UNMIS Indian peacekeepers were injured in the incident.

The Secretary-General extends his condolences to the Government of India and to the family of the deceased soldier and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured. He demands a swift investigation into this incident and calls on all Sudanese parties to fully cooperate with the United Nations.
