Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Augusto Santos Silva, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Augusto Santos Silva, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal.
They discussed the current political situation in Guinea-Bissau and the Secretary-General welcomed Portugal’s continued engagement in the country, including through the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). The Secretary-General also stressed the need for international partners to maintain a unified front in encouraging the political leadership of Guinea-Bissau to overcome the current impasse.
The Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister also exchanged views on the implementation of Agenda 2030 as well as of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Turning to regional matters, the Secretary-General noted the need for a common response to the large-scale movement of migrants and refugees, characterized by responsibility sharing and solidarity within Europe, as well as with host countries in the region. Finally, the Secretary-General thanked the Foreign Minister for Portugal’s support to the UN Mission in Mali, MINUSMA, as a troop-contributing country and through the European Union.
