Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China

The Secretary-General met today with His Excellency Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, on the margins of the G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia.  

He congratulated President Xi on his reelection as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, and reaffirmed the importance of multilateralism, international cooperation and solidarity to face today’s global challenges.  

The Secretary-General expressed concern in relation to the perfect storm faced by many developing countries and the significant increase in poverty, hunger and dramatic inequalities in the world.  

The Secretary-General expressed his interest in China’s contributions to the Climate Solidarity Pact and to the necessary reforms of the economic and financial system based on justice, equality and solidarity, bringing together all G20 countries. 

The Secretary-General reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to strengthen cooperation with the People’s Republic of China in all the pillars of the Organization’s work – peace and security, sustainable development including climate change, and human rights.    

The Secretary-General also briefed President Xi on recent developments related to the continuation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative and the removal of obstacles for unimpeded access of Russian food and fertilizers to global markets.
