Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General - on the Central African Republic [scroll down for French version]

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the attack by the Presidential Guard of the Central African Republic against a vehicle of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) in Bangui, on Monday, which resulted in the wounding of ten unarmed, newly deployed, Egyptian peacekeepers.   

The Secretary-General emphasizes that attacks against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute a war crime. He calls on the Central African authorities to spare no effort in investigating and promptly holding accountable the perpetrators of this unacceptable attack.

The Secretary-General wishes a speedy and full recovery to the wounded peacekeepers and civilians, and reiterates his gratitude to the people and the Government of Egypt for their contribution to peace and stability in the Central African Republic. The Secretary-General also expresses his deep condolences to the bereaved family of the Central African civilian who was killed during the incident.

The Secretary-General reaffirms the solidarity and continued support of the United Nations to the Central African Republic.

Déclaration attribuable au Porte-parole du Secrétaire général sur la République centrafricaine

Le Secrétaire général condamne fermement l'attaque perpétrée par la Garde présidentielle de la République centrafricaine contre un véhicule de la Mission multidimensionnelle intégrée des Nations Unies pour la stabilisation en République centrafricaine (MINUSCA) lundi, à Bangui. Cette attaque a fait dix blessés parmi les soldats de la paix égyptiens, non armés, qui venaient d’arriver à Bangui dans le cadre de leur déploiement.  

Le Secrétaire général rappelle que les attaques contre les soldats de la paix des Nations Unies peuvent constituer un crime de guerre. Il appelle les autorités centrafricaines à ne ménager aucun effort pour enquêter sur cette attaque inacceptable afin que les auteurs répondent rapidement de leurs actes.

Le Secrétaire général souhaite un prompt rétablissement aux soldats de la paix et aux civils blessés, et réitère sa gratitude au peuple et au gouvernement égyptiens pour leur contribution à la paix et à la stabilité en République centrafricaine. Le Secrétaire général exprime également ses profondes condoléances à la famille endeuillée du civil centrafricain qui a été tué lors de l'incident.

Le Secrétaire général réaffirme la solidarité et le soutien continu des Nations Unies à la République centrafricaine.
