Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General - on São Tomé and Príncipe

The Secretary-General has been closely following the presidential electoral process in São Tomé and Príncipe and notes that the first round was conducted peacefully. The Secretary-General welcomes the signature by the two presidential candidates of a code of conduct ahead of the second round set for 5 September. He encourages all stakeholders to continue using dialogue and established legal channels to settle disputes, and to refrain from any acts of violence.  

The Secretary-General also welcomes efforts by the Economic Community of Central African States to help build a peaceful path to long-term stability in the country, including through the deployment of a special envoy.

Le Secrétaire général suit de près le processus électoral en cours à Sao Tomé-et-Principe. Le Secrétaire général note que, dans l’ensemble, le premier tour s'est deroulé dans le calme. Le Secrétaire général salue la signature par les deux candidats à l’élection présidentielle d'un code de conduite en vue du second tour prévu le 5 septembre. Il encourage toutes les parties prenantes à continuer de recourir au dialogue et aux voies légales établies pour régler tous différends, et à s'abstenir de tout acte de violence.  

Le Secrétaire général salue également les efforts déployés par la Communauté économique des États de l'Afrique centrale (CEEAC) en vue de soutenir une approche pacifique pour la stabilité du pays à long-terme, notamment par le déploiement d'un envoyé spécial.
