The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Portuguese Republic. The Secretary-General commended Portugal’s leading role on oceans, including for the offer to host, together with Kenya, an Ocean Conference in 2020. The Secretary-General and the President discussed global efforts to combat climate change in order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement by 2020, as well as preparations for the 2019 Climate Change Summit. The Secretary-General and the President also exchanged views on Guinea-Bissau, including on the importance of holding legislative elections in November 2018 as scheduled, as well as on the peace process in Mozambique. Finally, the Secretary-General thanked Portugal for the important Portuguese contribution to the peacekeeping efforts in the Central African Republic.
