Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Stefan Löfven, Prime Minister of Sweden

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Stefan Löfven, Prime Minister of Sweden.

The Secretary-General congratulated Sweden on its election to the Security Council, and noted the importance of strengthening relations between the Council and the Peacebuilding Commission. 

He commended the Prime Minister for his country’s leadership and commitment to sustainable peace, human rights and gender equality, and in addressing the large movement of migrants and refugees. 

The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister exchanged views on the devastating conflict in Syria and the urgent need of ensuring humanitarian assistance to civilians.   

They also agreed on the importance of addressing sexual exploitation and abuse, and in combatting sexual violence in conflict. 

The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister further underlined the imperative of establishing the facts regarding the tragic death of former Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld and of those accompanying him.
