Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on the Conference of the Nuclear-Weapon States on Confidence Building Measures towards Nuclear Disarmanent and Non-Proliferation

The Secretary-General welcomes the holding of the second Conference on Confidence Building Measures towards Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation in Paris today. The Conference provides a unique opportunity for the five nuclear weapon States to engage on the full implementation of the action plans agreed to at the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons on nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, peaceful uses of nuclear energy and on the Middle East, particularly implementation of the 1995 Resolution on the Middle East. The Secretary-General also looks forward to greater efforts to promote transparency as a confidence building measure.
