Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on Western Sahara [scroll down for French version]

On the eve of a new round of discussions under UN auspices on Western Sahara, the Secretary-General wishes to express his appreciation to the parties and to the neighboring States for accepting his invitation to the talks, which are scheduled to resume tomorrow in Manhasset under the mediation of the Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Mr. Peter van Walsum, and under the terms of Security Council resolutions 1754 (2007) and 1783 (2007). The Secretary-General recognizes that it will take both time and patience to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution to this longstanding dispute. He appeals to the parties to make full use of this week's round of talks to begin moving into a more intensive and substantive phase of discussions.

A la veille d'un nouveau cycle de négociations sur le Sahara occidental sous les auspices des Nations Unies, le Secrétaire général souhaite exprimer sa reconnaissance aux parties et aux Etats voisins pour avoir accepté son invitation aux pourparlers qui sont prévus de commencer demain à Manhasset sous la médiation de l'Envoyé personnel du Secrétaire général, M. Peter van Walsum, et selon les termes des résolutions 1754 (2007) et 1783 (2007). Le Secrétaire général reconnaît que cela prendra à la fois du temps et de la patience de négocier une solution mutuellement acceptable pour cette dispute qui perdure. Il appelle les parties à faire plein usage de cette semaine de pourparlers pour commencer à s'orienter vers une phase de discussions plus intensive et substantielle.
