The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, on the margins of the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Secretary-General congratulated Malaysia on its successful chairmanship of ASEAN in 2015 and also commended Malaysia’s active role in the UN Security Council. They discussed the haze issue in Southeast Asia, and preparations for the climate change summit in Paris.
The leaders discussed the cooperation between Malaysia and the UN, as well as other regional issues such as irregular migration in Southeast Asia. The Secretary-General also informed about plans to convene a global summit to address irregular migration in September 2016.
They also highlighted the need to address the threat of violent extremism, including through a unified and multi-faceted global approach based on the rule of law and human rights. The Secretary-General looked forward to the next ASEAN-UN Regional Dialogue which will focus on prevention of violent extremism and planned to take place in Malaysia in early 2016.
