The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Michel Martelly, President of the Republic of Haiti.

The Secretary-General welcomed the organisation of the 9 August elections as a crucial step towards Haiti’s stabilisation. He called on President Martelly to show continued leadership in ensuring that the upcoming polls are conducted in a free and fair environment.

The Secretary-General reiterated the UN’s support for Haiti’s efforts to strengthen the rule of law and human rights. He encouraged the President to take strong ownership of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Secretary-General also conveyed his intention to conduct an assessment early next year to determine the role of the UN presence in Haiti beyond 2016.
