Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Mohammed Waheed, Special Envoy of the President of the Maldives

The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mohammed Waheed, Special Envoy of President Abdulla Yameen of the Maldives.

The Secretary-General praised the commitment made by the Maldives on addressing climate change. The Secretary-General emphasized the importance of protecting human rights and guaranteeing the independence of oversight institutions, such as the Human Rights Commission.

The Secretary-General welcomed the current political stability in the Maldives and encouraged the Government to focus on deepening the process of democratization, including by reforming key institutions, such as the judiciary.
