The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan, on the margins of the 4th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
He thanked President Karzai for his expressions of condolence and support following the attack against the UNAMA compound in Mazar-e Sharif last month. They discussed ways to improve the safety and security of UN staff in Afghanistan.
The Secretary-General and President Karzai also discussed prospects for reconciliation in and the UN's support to the Government-led political process.
The Secretary-General and the President agreed on the importance of focusing on sustainable development as part of the efforts to improve the economic situation in Afghanistan and more broadly promote peace amidst the current turmoil in the world.
They also discussed developments in the Middle East and North Africa, and expressed concern about mounting civilian casualties, particularly in Libya.
