Secretary-General's press encounter after visiting the Amazon
Press events | Ban Ki-moon, Former Secretary-General
I'm just fascinated by all this natural beauty and the numerous species of your nature here, but we must preserve this. I thank you for your genuine and passionate commitment to preserve this land. This can work for and against our common efforts to address global warming depending on who [manages it] and how [well-]managed it is. That is why I'm immensely grateful to all of you, and that is why, as Secretary-General of the United Nations, I make my firm commitment that the United Nations will work together with you, stand by you. Let us work together, and we shall continue this good success and management and well-being. Governor Carepa, Minister Silva, thank you very much. I was encouraged also by the commitment of President Lula yesterday. He's very committed to preserve this nature. He has committed not to use this land for?any other purpose. That is very important.
I am concluding my visit, my tour, to learn more and see for myself how the United Nations, the international community should address the global warming issue. The natural beauty of the Amazon River is fantastic, and these numerous kinds of species, the biological diversity along the Amazon River Basin, is again very fascinating. I'm very much committed to working together with all of you, with all the leaders of the international community, to address this issue, and I am returning with a sense of great achievement. I have learned a great deal from my very brief tour to Antarctica and the Andes Mountains and lastly the Amazon River. Muito obrigado.
