Remarks at 5th General Assembly of the 2010 Kigali International Conference Declaration

I am pleased to open this important meeting.

Since I became Secretary-General almost a decade ago, I have been a staunch advocate for ending violence against women and girls.

This is why I launched the UNiTE campaign in 2008. Today, scores of leaders and ministers, hundreds parliamentarians and millions of individuals have added their names to the action call.
The tireless efforts of the women’s movement, Governments and other partners have put this struggle at the centre of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Remarks at Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Remarks to press following meeting with Secretary-General of the Polisario Front

I am honored to be able to visit here today.

I had a very good meeting with Secretary-General [Mohamed] Abdelaziz and I would like to take this opportunity to express my most sincere thanks for their very kind welcome.

I have been very much moved seeing for myself what their aspirations and their challenges are.

As you know this morning, I went to Smara camp. I wanted to start my programme there by meeting with school children and representatives of young people in Smara camp.

Remark to UN staff in Algiers, Algeria

Dear colleagues,

Dear friends,

It is an honour to meet with all of you today. Since Tuesday last week, you have been on my mind every hour of every day. I very much regret I was not able to reach you until now.

Few of us can imagine the pain you are grappling with. You work here with no other mission than to help the people of Algeria create a better future. One of your injured colleagues, an Algerian national, put it so well: “When you love your country, you build it, you don’t destroy it.”
