The Secretary-General commends today’s welcome announcement by the President of Colombia that the Government will provide temporary protection to the 1.7 million Venezuelans in the country. This important act of solidarity will allow approximately a third of the 5 million Venezuelan refugees and migrants in the region to formally access services and contribute to the Colombian economy.
The Secretary-General notes that this announcement comes at a time when the country is faced with the unrelenting health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The inclusion of Venezuelan refugees and migrants will contribute to the pandemic recovery process and enable Venezuelans in Colombia to access the country’s health and other basic services.
The Secretary-General reiterates the commitment of the United Nations to accompany and support the Government and people of Colombia in their efforts to respond to the needs of vulnerable Colombians and Venezuelans.

El Secretario General elogia el anuncio realizado hoy por el Presidente de Colombia sobre la protección temporal que proporcionará el gobierno a los 1,7 millones de venezolanos que se encuentran en el país. Este importante acto de solidaridad permitirá que aproximadamente un tercio de los 5 millones de refugiados y migrantes venezolanos en la región puedan acceder formalmente a servicios y contribuir a la economía colombiana.
El Secretario General señala que este anuncio se produce en un momento en el que el país enfrenta los implacables impactos sanitarios y económicos de la pandemia del COVID-19. La inclusión de los refugiados y migrantes venezolanos contribuirá al proceso de recuperación de la pandemia y permitirá a los venezolanos en Colombia acceder a los servicios de salud y otros servicios básicos del país.
El Secretario General reitera el compromiso de las Naciones Unidas de acompañar y apoyar al Gobierno y al pueblo de Colombia en sus esfuerzos por responder a las necesidades de los colombianos y venezolanos vulnerables.
