Secretary-General's video message on the launch of Namibia's International Women's Peace Centre

António Guterres, Secretary-General

I congratulate Namibia on the launch of this International Women’s Peace Centre. This initiative reaffirms Namibia’s commitment to women’s leadership and full participation in making and keeping the peace.

Twenty years ago today, Namibian leadership on the United Nations Security Council oversaw the adoption of landmark resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. Resolution 1325 recognized the strong correlation between gender inequality and the risk of conflict.

Women’s equal leadership and participation in all aspects of peacemaking and peacebuilding are essential, not only for women, but for everyone.

I salute Namibia for your leadership on peace and security and women’s rights, which have become more urgent than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic.

You have laid strong foundations for the success of the International Women’s Peace Centre.

I send you best wishes for this Centre, and for all your efforts to build a culture of peace for generations to come.
