I was saddened by the tragic death of President Idriss Déby, whom I knew very well, on 19 April.

On behalf of the United Nations, I reiterate my deepest condolences to his family, to the Government and to the people of Chad.    

President Déby worked tirelessly for the stability of his country, the sub-region and the entire African continent.

He transformed Chad into an influential regional power that has played a key role in the region, from the Sahel to the Lake Chad Basin. 

Under his leadership – and this is something I personally witnessed - Chad has opened its doors to thousands of refugees from neighboring countries, generously hosting them and sharing its limited resources with them.

President Déby has been a key partner for the United Nations, notably in the fight against terrorism, violent extremism and organized crime. 

At this pivotal time for Chad, I wish to underline the strong commitment of the United Nations to serve the people of Chad in their quest for an inclusive and prosperous future.  

I hope that in the coming days Chadians will be able to find, together, a consensual and peaceful path to the future. 

This will be essential to continue progress towards sustainable peace, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, strengthening democracy and the protection of human rights for all.

J'ai été attristé par la mort tragique du Président Idriss Déby, que je connaissais très bien, le 19 avril.

Au nom des Nations Unies, je réitère mes plus sincères condoléances à sa famille, au gouvernement ainsi qu’au peuple tchadien.    

Le Président Déby a œuvré sans relâche pour la stabilité de son pays, de la sous-région et de tout le continent africain.

Il a transformé le Tchad en une puissance régionale influente qui a joué un rôle essentiel dans la région, du Sahel au bassin du lac Tchad. 

Sous son leadership, et j’en suis témoin personnellement, le Tchad a ouvert ses portes à des milliers de réfugiés des pays voisins, les accueillant généreusement et partageant avec eux ses ressources, bien que très limitées.

Le Président Déby a été un partenaire essentiel pour l’Organisation des Nations Unies, notamment dans la lutte contre le terrorisme, l'extrémisme violent et le crime organisé. 

En cette période charnière pour le Tchad, je tiens à souligner la forte détermination des Nations Unies à servir le peuple tchadien dans sa quête d'un avenir inclusif et prospère.

J'espère que les Tchadiens pourront dans les prochains jours trouver, tous ensemble, un chemin consensuel et pacifique vers l’avenir. 

C’est essentiel pour continuer à progresser vers une paix durable, la réalisation des Objectifs de Développement Durable, le renforcement de la démocratie et la protection des droits humains pour tous.
