Readout of Secretary-General's meeting with H. E. Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan.

The Secretary-General met today with H. E. Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan. 

The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for Japan’s fruitful cooperation with the United Nations and its contributions and active leadership in formulating the post-2015 development agenda, addressing climate change, and achieving sustainable development.  He commended the Prime Minister’s commitment to women’s empowerment.  He also thanked Japan for its contributions to United Nations peacekeeping.

The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister discussed the situation in Syria, Myanmar and on the Korean Peninsula.  They also exchanged views on multilateral cooperation in Northeast Asia.  The Secretary-General appreciated Japan’s generous support to humanitarian efforts related to Syria and in neighbouring countries.  He also commended Japan for its continued leadership on supporting development efforts by African countries.
